The Hermit: The Lantern That Lights One Step
Sometimes we need to step away from the noise to find our own light.
The Hermit is card nine of the Major Arcana. He stands alone on a snowy peak, holding a lantern containing a six-pointed star. His light does not reach far; it illuminates just the next step.
Solitude, not loneliness
The Hermit represents a chosen withdrawal: time apart to reflect, listen and find our own wisdom. It is the opposite of loneliness. It is solitude in service of clarity.
One step at a time
The lantern’s modest light is a quiet lesson. We rarely see the whole path. We see enough for the next step, and that is enough.
Virgo
The Golden Dawn linked the Hermit to Virgo, the sign of discernment and service, and to the Hebrew letter Yod.
A practice
Take twenty minutes alone today without your phone. Walk, sit or simply be. Afterwards, note one thing that became clearer.
