The High Priestess: The Wisdom of Stillness
Between two pillars she sits in silence, keeper of what words cannot hold.
The High Priestess is card two of the Major Arcana. In Pamela Colman Smith’s painting she sits between a dark pillar and a light one, marked B and J after the pillars of Solomon’s temple, with a veil of pomegranates behind her and a crescent moon at her feet.
Inner knowing
Where the Magician acts, the High Priestess receives. She represents intuition, stillness and the wisdom that arrives when we stop trying so hard. The Principle of Gender reminds us that creation needs both.
The two pillars
The dark and light pillars echo the Principle of Polarity. She sits between them, not choosing one, but holding both in balance.
The Moon
The Golden Dawn linked her to the Moon and to the Hebrew letter Gimel.
A practice
Sit in silence for five minutes with a question you have been turning over. Don’t try to answer it. Simply listen, and notice what arrives afterwards, perhaps hours later.
