Self-Image and the Mirror of Life
How we see ourselves quietly shapes what we allow ourselves to have.
Our self-image is the picture we hold of who we are: what we are capable of, what we deserve, how others see us. Much of it formed early, and much of it runs beneath awareness.
The mirror
Through the Principle of Correspondence, our outer world often mirrors our inner image. Someone who quietly believes they are “not a confident person” may avoid the very situations that would build confidence, and so the belief seems confirmed.
Images can change
The good news is that self-image is learned, and what is learned can be gently relearned. We can practise seeing ourselves as the person we are becoming, and act a little more as that person each day.
Kindness first
Self-image changes most easily in a climate of kindness. Harsh self-criticism tends to reinforce the old picture. Patience and encouragement help the new one grow.
A practice
Write one sentence describing yourself as you would love to be, in the present tense. Read it each day this week, and take one small action that fits it.
