Fear at the Edge of Growth
Fear often appears exactly where our next step begins. That is a sign, not a stop sign.
Whenever we step towards something new, fear and doubt tend to arrive. Thinking Into Results calls this point the “terror barrier”: the edge where our old self-image meets our new goal.
Why it happens
The habit mind prefers the familiar. When we act beyond our usual patterns, it raises the alarm, even when the new step is good for us. The feeling is real, but it is not a reliable guide to danger.
Polarity
Fear and courage live on the same line. Courage is not the absence of fear; it is fear walking forward anyway. Each brave step moves us a little further along the line.
After the edge
Once we cross, the edge moves. What was frightening becomes familiar, and our sense of what is possible grows.
A practice
Name one fear connected to a goal you care about. Ask: “What would I do if this fear were simply a sign that I am growing?” Take one small step in that spirit.
