Choosing a Worthy Ideal

A goal that excites you creates energy. A goal you think you ought to want rarely does. Here is how to choose well.

The first lesson of Thinking Into Results asks a deceptively simple question: what do you truly want? Not what you think you should want, or what others expect of you, but a goal so meaningful that it pulls you forward, even on ordinary days. It calls this a worthy ideal.

Want, not should

Goals built on “should” tend to run out of energy. Goals built on genuine desire carry their own momentum. One useful test is to imagine your life a year from now with the goal achieved, and notice how you feel. Excitement and warmth are good signs. A sense of obligation is worth questioning.

A little beyond reach

A worthy ideal usually feels a little beyond what seems possible today. That is part of its power. If we already knew exactly how to reach it, it would not ask us to grow. The Principle of Polarity reminds us that the distance between “not yet” and “now” can be crossed, degree by degree.

Writing your goal card

Write your goal on a small card, in the present tense, as though it is already true, and with a sense of gratitude. Read it each morning and evening, slowly and with feeling. This simple practice is how a new idea begins to settle into the deeper mind.

Courage to begin

Choosing a worthy ideal is an act of courage, the energy of Aries, the first sign of the zodiac. It is a decision to stop waiting for the perfect moment and begin. You may not see the whole path, and you do not need to. You need only the next step.

A practice

Ask yourself: “If I knew I could not fail, what would I love to create this year?” Write your answer on a card tonight. Read it tomorrow morning. That is how every worthy ideal begins.
