Air: Breath, Thought and Connection
Air carries ideas and words between us, and the breath that keeps us alive.
Air is the element of thought, communication and connection. In astrology it belongs to Gemini, Libra and Aquarius; in the tarot, to the suit of Swords. Aristotle described it as hot and wet.
Breath and spirit
In Latin, spiritus means breath. The Hebrew ruach and the Greek pneuma mean both wind and spirit. Across languages, breath and spirit have been understood as one.
What air gives
Air gives perspective, curiosity and the ability to see beyond the moment. It lets us share ideas, learn from others and imagine new possibilities.
Too little, too much
With too little air, we can feel stuck in the immediate. With too much, we may live only in our heads, thinking rather than feeling or doing.
A practice
Take a few unhurried breaths, letting each out-breath be a little longer than the in-breath. Notice how your thoughts settle as your breathing slows.
