The Planetary Days of the Week
Our week still carries the names of the seven classical planets.
Each day of the week was once dedicated to one of the seven classical planets: the Sun, the Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn. We still speak their names every week, often without noticing.
In English and beyond
Sunday and Monday honour the Sun and Moon. Saturday is Saturn’s day. The days in between took the names of Norse gods matched to the planets: Tiw for Mars on Tuesday, Woden for Mercury on Wednesday, Thor for Jupiter on Thursday and Frigg for Venus on Friday. In French the planets are even clearer: mardi, mercredi, jeudi, vendredi.
A week with a rhythm
Many people enjoy letting each day’s planet colour their week: purpose on Sunday, care on Monday, courage on Tuesday, learning on Wednesday, generosity on Thursday, connection on Friday and completion on Saturday.
A practice
This week, glance at the day’s planet each morning on our Today’s sky page. Let it suggest one small intention. At the week’s end, notice whether your days felt more balanced.
