The Ascendant: The Doorway Through Which We Meet Life

Your rising sign describes how you greet the world, and how it tends to greet you back.

The Ascendant, or rising sign, is the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of your birth. Because the sky turns through all twelve signs each day, it depends on your exact birth time and place.

The doorway

Astrologers often describe the Ascendant as a doorway: the way we instinctively meet new people and situations, and the first impression we tend to give. A Leo rising may greet life warmly and openly; a Capricorn rising, with quiet composure.

As above, so below

Through the Principle of Correspondence, the Ascendant also suggests how the world tends to respond to us. When we change the way we greet life, life often greets us differently in return.

Why birth time matters
