The Stoic Thread
How Stoicism weaves into everything on this site.
Over twenty parts, we have walked from a shipwreck near Athens to the therapist’s room, from the Painted Porch to an emperor’s notebook. Now we can see how Stoicism joins the common thread that runs through all of this work.
Two circles
At the heart of this site is the vesica piscis: two circles meeting. Stoicism draws its own two circles: what is ours, and what is not. Where they meet lies our influence, our effort and our part. It is the same shape of wisdom.
The Hermetic principles
The Hermetic teaching that the All is Mind and the Stoic Logos are close cousins. Both see the universe as ordered by reason, and both invite us to align our own minds with that order.
Know thyself
The words at Delphi, know thyself, run through Stoicism too. To know what is truly ours, we must first know ourselves: our judgements, our habits, our values.
Thinking Into Results
Earl Nightingale’s strangest secret, that we become what we think about, and the work of Thinking Into Results both rest on a Stoic foundation: change the thinking, and in time the results follow.
Freedom
Above all, Stoicism points towards freedom: not freedom from life’s difficulties, but freedom within them. That is the freedom Charlotte hopes to share, gently and one step at a time.
A simple practice
Choose the one Stoic idea from this series that has meant most to you. Write it on a card and keep it close this week. If you would like company on the journey, Charlotte would love to hear from you.
