The Logos and Living with Nature

The Stoic thread of reason running through all things.

The Stoics looked at the world and saw order: the seasons turning, the stars in their courses, the growth of every living thing. They called the reason behind that order the Logos.

Reason in all things

For the Stoics, the Logos was divine reason running through the whole universe, like a thread through cloth. Every human mind, they taught, carries a spark of that same reason. That is why we can understand the world, and why we belong in it.

Living in agreement with nature

The Stoic goal was to live “in agreement with nature”. This did not mean living in the woods. It meant living in harmony with reason: thinking clearly, acting fairly, and accepting the natural turning of life with grace.

One great community

Because every person shares in the Logos, the Stoics saw all people as one family, citizens of the world. The philosopher Hierocles pictured each of us at the centre of circles: self, family, friends, community, humanity. He encouraged us to draw the outer circles inwards, treating strangers a little more like kin.

The thread on this site

This is close kin to the Hermetic teaching that the All is Mind, and to the common thread of this site: the meeting of the self with something greater, where two circles overlap. The Logos is one of the oldest names for that greater reason.
