Mental Transmutation: Turning Lead into Gold
The Kybalion’s name for the art behind all seven principles.
The Kybalion calls the practical art of the Hermetic principles “mental transmutation”: the changing of mental states, as the alchemists sought to change metals. Its axiom reads: “Mind (as well as metals and elements) may be transmuted, from state to state; degree to degree; condition to condition; pole to pole; vibration to vibration.”
Lead into gold
The image is alchemical: turning the lead of heavy, habitual states into the gold of clarity, courage and peace. It is not instant, and it is not magic. It is practice.
How it works
Mental transmutation draws on the principles together. We choose a state (Mentalism). We notice where we are without judgement (Correspondence). We move along the line towards the opposite pole, worry towards trust (Polarity and Vibration). We keep going through the dips (Rhythm). And we act, so results follow (Cause and Effect).
Small transmutations
Most transmutation happens in small moments: a deep breath before a reply, a grateful thought in a tired hour, a step taken despite fear.
A practice
Next time a heavy feeling arises, name it, then name its opposite. Ask: “What would move me one degree towards the opposite?” Do that one thing.
