The Four Suits: Everyday Life in Four Elements
Wands, Cups, Swords and Pentacles mirror the four ways we live each day.
The fifty-six Minor Arcana are divided into four suits, each linked to one of the classical elements. Together they describe the texture of everyday life.
Wands: fire
Wands are inspiration, ambition and the spark of action: our projects, passions and drive.
Cups: water
Cups are feeling, love and relationship: our emotional life, friendships and intuition.
Swords: air
Swords are thought, truth and decision: our minds, our words and the clarity, or confusion, they bring.
Pentacles: earth
Pentacles are body, work, home and money: the practical, physical world we build day by day.
Ace to ten
Each suit runs from ace, a seed, to ten, a completed cycle, followed by four court cards. Reading a suit in order is like watching an element unfold through a story.
A practice
Ask: “Which suit is most alive in my life this week, and which is quiet?” Give the quiet one a little attention.
