The Feather of Ma’at and the Humble Heart

An ancient Egyptian image and a medieval legend share a single teaching about the lightness of a truthful heart.

In ancient Egyptian belief, the heart of a person who had died was weighed on a great scale against a single feather: the feather of Ma’at, the goddess of truth, balance and cosmic order. The scene appears in the funerary texts often called the Book of the Dead. A heart light with truth passed on in peace.

A light heart

It is a striking image. Not a heart full of achievements or possessions, but a heart unburdened: honest, balanced and at peace with how it has lived. We use the phrase “light-hearted” without thinking, yet it carries something of this ancient wisdom.

The sword and the brother

A very different story teaches something similar. In Thomas Malory’s telling of the Arthurian legend, the young Arthur draws the sword from the stone not to claim a crown, but because his foster brother Kay needs a sword for a tournament. His greatness begins with a simple act of service, offered without seeking glory.

Humility and Cause and Effect

Both stories point to the Hermetic Principle of Cause and Effect. What we do with a humble heart, for the good of others as well as ourselves, returns to us in kind. Humility is not thinking less of ourselves; it is thinking of ourselves a little less often, and of others a little more.

The music within

Pythagoras taught that the planets sound a music of perfect proportion. We carry a rhythm of our own: the steady beat of the heart, keeping time without our effort. Perhaps the lightest heart is one that listens to its own music.

A practice

At the end of today, rest a hand on your heart and ask: “What is weighing on my heart that truth or kindness could lighten?” If an answer comes, take one small step towards it tomorrow.
